Bungie expects to spend until January or February 2027 in pre-production on the unvaulting of old Destiny 2 content, according to a community update post. Full production then runs for about 12 months, which puts the finish line at the beginning of 2028. Push Square and Rock Paper Shotgun both reported the timeline on 29 October.
The studio's own summary, as relayed by Push Square, is short: "It's a lot of content."
What is being brought back
Head of product Josh Deane describes the first pass as getting the campaign slate whole again. Per Rock Paper Shotgun's reading of the blog post, Bungie is specifically targeting the activity content of Campaigns, Strikes and Raids from vaulted expansions. Deane says that pass will be available to all players.
Once that content is done, Bungie has also assembled a list of stretch goals it will consider. Push Square's report does not detail what is on that list in the material quoted here.
How it got here
The timeline follows a sequence of announcements this year. Bungie said earlier in 2026 that it would stop working on major updates for Destiny 2. Last month it then promised to bring back all of the game's vaulted campaigns.
According to Rock Paper Shotgun, work on the unvaulting began in June, when the team scoped how feasible it would be. The project is now in pre-production, the stage Bungie expects to stay in for the next few months.
Push Square reports Bungie needs 12 months for production and porting. The quoted passages do not break down the work further.
Bungie's post also touches on what comes after the unvaulting, with Rock Paper Shotgun describing the hints about the series' future as light teases. The quoted material includes no specifics. Between now and the start of the unvaulting production phase, Push Square notes that other Destiny 2 content and updates are still planned.
