Phantom Blade Zero arrives on October 29 with a rare kind of critical consensus: not universal perfection, but near-universal enthusiasm. Across Metacritic and OpenCritic, reviewers are praising the same things and warning about the same problems. The final score is at the end of this review.
PWN!WIRE does not play games. This review is a synthesis of published critic reviews and public aggregator scores, with every source linked below. It is not a first-hand verdict.
The agreement starts with combat. Reviewers repeatedly describe S-GAME's fight system as fast, precise and unusually confident for a studio's first major action RPG. Push Square calls it "one of the PS5's very best action games." GamingBolt praises "phenomenal combat, memorable bosses." TheSixthAxis calls the game "spectacular, occasionally gloriously ridiculous." The wuxia-inspired "Kungfupunk" setting, weapon variety and boss design come up again and again.
The caveats are just as consistent. Checkpoint Gaming praises the combat but flags "convoluted storytelling and some frustrating navigation." Gameblog says the difficulty can inspire "as much excitement and awe as it does frustration," and notes that lower difficulty settings can swing too far the other way. SECTOR.sk points to confusing map navigation, forced exploration and backtracking as pacing problems. Several reviews mention technical and polish issues, though most treat them as blemishes rather than deal-breakers.
That is why the final score is high rather than perfect. The highs are generation-defining for some critics; the lows are real enough that a perfect score would flatten the disagreement.
There is no player score yet. Metacritic says user reviews are not available before launch, and OpenCritic's page is critic-only. We will add the player score when the game is out and enough ratings exist. If the player score lands far from the critic consensus, the overall score will move with it.
For now, Phantom Blade Zero is the rare case where the review consensus is strong enough to be useful before launch: a stylish, difficult action game with exceptional combat and a story that does not always keep up. If that trade-off sounds acceptable, the critics think you should pay attention.
