EA didn't just shut BioWare down this week. It closed the book on Mass Effect's next chapter — and then somebody posted the cover art.

A trailer for the cancelled sequel, carrying the title Mass Effect: Universe, surfaced on Reddit roughly 24 hours after EA confirmed it was closing the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age and cutting about 400 jobs across the company. The video opens with a disclaimer that it's in-engine footage built from pre-production assets, which is the standard hedge for a marketing beat that never got to be marketing.

It still looks like Mass Effect. A new protagonist in an N7 trench coat shares a scene with a returning Liara T'Soni, per Kotaku's frame-by-frame breakdown, and the whole thing leans into the Citadel-as-Coruscant energy the series has always worn proudly. Jason Schreier corroborated the footage's authenticity, and IGN has heard a public-facing version was "ready for release" — the cruellest detail in the entire mess. The trailer was finished. It just never got to ship.

Polygon notes the leak promised something fans have requested since the original trilogy, which is exactly why the reaction curdled so fast from excitement into something closer to grief. You can watch a studio's best-laid plans and its cancellation notice in the same afternoon.

Not everything died with the studio. IGN reports the Mass Effect TV series at Prime Video is still in active development, because the franchise can apparently survive anywhere that doesn't require a combat system. And former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah has suggested EA might be more likely to sell off IPs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age now — though he attached a significant caveat to that read.

There's also a strange consolation prize in the same news cycle. Exodus, the sci-fi RPG from Archetype Entertainment — co-founded by ex-BioWare developers Chad Robertson, James Ohlen and Drew Karpyshyn — just showed off a reworked male protagonist. Jun Aslan got a new face, revealed in a studio video, after player feedback on the version shown during previews. Same DNA, different logo, still shipping.

One leaked trailer, one cancelled game, one studio that ran for 31 years. That's the whole trade in a single week.
