The Nemesis system has escaped Middle-earth, and it went west. A new Red Dead Redemption 2 mod called enRAGE tracks how individual NPCs feel about you, then lets those feelings fester into something worse.

The pitch, as quoted by GamesRadar: "Rob a man, beat him or insult him, and he may not forget." That's the whole idea in one line. In vanilla RDR2, a stranger you knock out in Valentine is a stranger again ten minutes later. Here, he remembers your face, your coat, and what you did to him.

Polygon describes the result as Shadow of Mordor meets the Wild West, with personal grudges layered on top of rival factions and gang wars that shift as your history with them piles up. IGN reports the modder leaned on AI to build the tracking that makes it work — the only realistic way to wire that much memory into a game that shipped without it in 2018.

This is the kind of mod that changes the texture of a playthrough rather than the content. Ambushes stop being random. A guy you humiliated outside a saloon three in-game weeks ago turns up with friends and a plan. Rockstar's open world already has some of the sharpest reactive NPC barks in the business; what it never had was continuity.

Caveats apply, as they always do with mods. This is community work, not a Rockstar patch, and it's a PC-only affair.

A grudge system like this has basically belonged to one franchise since 2014. Watching it grafted onto a Western — and actually functioning — says a lot about how much life is left in the idea.
