The video landed on Reddit roughly 24 hours after the worst news Mass Effect fans have ever received. It carries the title Mass Effect: Universe, opens with a card noting the footage was captured in-engine from pre-production assets, and gives the clearest look anyone has had at the game EA just killed.

The context is brutal. EA confirmed this week that BioWare is closing after 31 years and that development on the next Mass Effect is over, part of a restructuring that eliminates around 400 jobs. Bloomberg and the Los Angeles Times both reported the figure. The studio behind Baldur's Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Dragon Age is simply gone, and the sequel that was supposed to redeem Andromeda went with it.

The leak's credibility is unusually solid for a Reddit drop. Jason Schreier confirmed on Bluesky that the footage is real. IGN reported that a public-facing version of the trailer had been completed and was ready for release. Push Square's write-up includes a line from the team: "We were making a great game." Six words, and the whole tragedy is in them.

What's actually in the footage? A new protagonist in an N7 trench coat, Liara T'Soni back on screen, and a tone pitched closer to the original trilogy than anything BioWare shipped in the last decade. Polygon notes the concept would have paid off a request fans have been making for decades, while Kotaku's breakdown gets into the returning cast. Watch it while it's still up.

If you need a coping mechanism, Archetype Entertainment has one. The studio co-founded by former BioWare leads James Ohlen and Drew Karpyshyn just revealed a reworked face for Exodus's male protagonist, Jun Aslan. General manager Chad Robertson explained in a new video that the change came from player feedback — the earlier model wore a five-o'clock shadow and a noticeably different bone structure. Small detail, sure. But it's a Mass Effect-shaped RPG made by the people who built Mass Effect, and right now that's the closest thing to a consolation prize.

Two more threads worth holding. The Mass Effect TV series at Prime Video is reportedly still in development despite the studio closure. And former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah has suggested EA may be more likely to sell franchises like Mass Effect and Dragon Age than to sit on them — with caveats attached. Neither is a rescue. Both are reasons not to write the epitaph just yet.
